Winter Break

Welcome back Friendship Class!

I hope that everyone enjoyed their winter break. I was just sitting here thinking about all the mental math that I did in my head over break. Can you believe that? Let me give you an example.

My children were both with their grandparents for a few days at the beach. Well wouldn't you know that they were expected home around the same time that I was going to visit Ms. Felkl in the hospital. So I had to figure out if I had enough time to visit with Ms. Felkl and make it home in time to meet my children. My parents left the beach at 10:50 so I just rounded the time to 10:00. Ms. D'Meza was picking me up at 11:30 so we could be sure that we could make it to the hospital by 12:00. Then I has to figure out how long I could stay and visit with Ms. Felkl. I decided that I could stay for an hour and still make it back to my house before my children came home. It is a 3 1/2 hour drive from the beach to my house. So if my children left at 10:00 what time should I expect them to be home?

Questions for you:

First, if my children left the beach at 10:00 and they have a 3 1/2 hour ride home, what time should they arrive home? How did you figure out the answer? (Leave me a comment.)

Next, on your blog, leave a post that describes a time that you used math over your winter break.

See you soon!

Will I Finish the First Grade Projects?

Okay-so I was wondering if you could help me? I am working with Ms. D'Meza's class on their family projects. They are going to share them with their families on Multi-cultural Night.

This is where I need your help. I have two days left. It took me 2 hours to help 5 kids finish their projects. I have 10 more students to go. How many more hours will it take me to help the rest of the students finish their projects?

Thanks for your help!

Math in the Computer Lab

Did you guys know that I use Math in the computer lab? Let me give you an example. When Kindergarteners come into the lab, they do not log on. I log the computers on for them. Ms. Middleton's class comes to the lab tomorrow. If I have 6 computers in each row and I need to use 18 computers, how many rows of computers will I need to log on? Please "comment" with your answer. Don't forget to also tell me how you came to that answer. When you are finished I want you to create a post on your blog with a word problem that deals with multiplication.
